So how easy is it to be a donor?
What does it take to become a bone marrow donor?
What most people don’t know is that becoming a bone marrow donor is very easy; it’s a simple blood test. This blood test provides the information needed to be matched as a potential life-saving donor. This can be done the next time
you give blood at the local blood bank. However, you must specifically request that the blood bank place you on the National Registry list. If you do not make this request, you will not be placed on the list. The
importance for the testing is that about 70% of patients will not have a family member match, and will need to research the National Registry to find a bone marrow donor.
What happens if I’m matched up with someone who needs bone marrow?
The method for collecting bone marrow for allogeneic transplants is by removing the cells through an IV in your arm. You are given a medication which stimulates cell production, and causes the stems cells to be released from the bone marrow into the blood stream. The
doctor will use a blood test to determine just how many cells are circulating in the blood stream. Once there are enough cells, they are removed by using an IV and the blood is processed through a pheresis machine to remove the necessary cells. The remainder of the blood is returned back to you!
Technology has made it so much easier become a donor and to save lives. However, it all cost money to proceed and that's where you come in! Please consider becoming a donor or make a financial contribution...and Thank You!
